Stu's Walk - the post match report by our chief walking pundit Paul Tyrer

Stu’s Walk

On 10th June 2012, a group of family and friends of Stuart Tyrer staged a sponsored walk in memory of Stuart, who died at the age of 23 in an accident on Snowdon in April this year. 26 people walked to the summit of Snowdon from Snowdon café in Pen Ceunant, near Llanberis. The walkers were supported by a basecamp team of 6, who manned a publicity stall, collected donations, and prepared hot food for the walkers on their return.

Funds collected are to be split between Mountain Rescue, SARDA (Search & Rescue Dogs Association), and Help for Heroes.

The Walk

The walk departed from Snowdon Café, Pen Ceunant SH579592 at 09:40. The 26 walkers followed the Llanberis Path to Snowdon summit SH610543, arriving at 12:50. Return was by the same route, leaving the summit at 14:00 and arriving back at Snowdon Café at 16:10.

The weather was fine and clear with little or no wind and excellent visibility over Anglesey to the North, and most people were walking in T shirts. We encountered cloud at the 1000m level, ½km short of the summit. With a temperature at this height of 6-7o C, a light southerly wind felt cold enough to persuade most people to put a jacket on. It then started to rain whilst the team were in the summit café, and this continued until about ½ hour into the descent, after which the weather again turned fine and dry.

At the summit, we held an informal ceremony a short distance down the path which Stuart is believed to have taken from the summit. We laid a small bunch of poppies, with a memorial card, and the 55 Squadron Brick was presented to its last-ever recipient. This was a touching and emotional tribute to Stuart, and the team then retired to the summit café.
